introduction

Mojek is a technology company that’s on a mission to help individuals to make better financial decisions with a dream to build an inclusive financial ecosystem by consolidating finances on a single platform and automating all the financial activities like managing finances, tax filing etc.

my role

As a member of the founding team, I am employed as a product manager and owner. I look over the design and development teams for the creation of the mobile and web applications. I oversee the product's progression through the vision, user interviews, strategy, design, and early MVP stages (continuing till date). I also designed and developed the company website.

Together with the team, I actively participate in the product design process and creating of the designs.

Due of the small team size, my duties also include overseeing the daily operations of the product. Along with the founder and the financial analyst, I created the pitch deck and participated in the investor meetings' pitches. One of the noteworthy meeting was with Nithin Kamath, founder of Zerodha.

the problems we were trying to solve

The management of finances is now chaotic. due to the use of numerous banking institutions and investing platforms, it is impossible to gain a complete picture of wealth. A surplus of knowledge causes confusion, panic, and an over- or under-diversification of assets.

We spoke to 400+ individuals and here is what we found out:

56%

feel their financial goals are out of reach

64%

of investors lack basic information on their investments

65.8%

find it difficult to track their expenses

50%+

women we spoke to did not invest because they didn’t know how to

63.5%

investors use 4 or more apps to track & manage their finances

85%

deal with financial stress

As the fintech industry grows, complexity will increase, ease to manage finances will decrease

50.5% of the sample size were male, 47.5% were female and 2% preffered not to say

unfortunately I can only share this much publicly, so lets get on a call to discuss the user testing outcomes, metrics, roadmaps, strategies, business model, takeaways and furthermore about the product.

let's talk

key takeaways

  • How to strengthen my process using methods from various fields. This is the result of realising that creating a Conversational UI is substantially the same as creating a conventional interface.

  • How to improve communication between all team members by utilising existing platforms like Slack, ClickUp, and Scrum Mythology.

  • One of the most recent products I worked on allowed me to demonstrate my ability to work with new technologies (including AI, ML, and NLP) without having to build any code that is ready for production.

  • How to approach a platform with several sides and ensure that you are providing solutions for the right side, or "When the user experiences X, the business feels Y"

  • How being in a bootstrapped startup affects decisions, what it implies, and how to manage expenditures and burn rate while operating lean.

  • How to make the most of my inherent communication skills to expand my network and make connections with CEOs and business veterans for mentoring.

Building the fintech super-app for the Indian youth: The 0 to 1 journey

Introduction

Mojek Money is a fintech startup that is focused on providing innovative and accessible financial solutions for individuals with a goal to revolutionize the way people manage their finances and help them achieve their financial goals.

Product

The flagship product is a mobile app that enables users to manage their money, track their spending, and invest for the future. The app is intuitive, easy to use, and designed to provide a personalized experience for each user. Tracking includes a consolidated view across various investment classes like equities, debt, real estate, crypto etc. The app lets users ask free form data questions through large language learning models (LLM) embedded within the AI engine.  The LLM engine is used to analyze users' financial history and provide personalized recommendations for investments, budgeting or other financial decisions.

The problems we were trying to solve

  1. Chaotic Financial Management: The current landscape of managing finances has become chaotic. With the use of multiple banking institutions and investing platforms, individuals struggle to gain a complete and coherent picture of their wealth. The scattered information leads to confusion, panic, and an inability to effectively manage and track assets.
  2. Information Overload and Confusion: The abundance of financial knowledge available exacerbates the problem. People are inundated with a surplus of information, making it difficult to discern the most relevant and actionable insights. This overload of information further contributes to the confusion and hampers decision-making processes.
  3. Panic-driven Asset Allocation: Without a clear understanding of their overall financial situation, individuals often resort to panic-driven actions. This can result in over-diversification or under-diversification of assets, leading to suboptimal investment strategies. The lack of a comprehensive and consolidated view of their wealth prevents them from making informed and strategic decisions.

My role

As a Product Leader at Mojek, I've been the dynamic force behind the scenes, shaping the company's growth. From joining as the second team member in its infancy, I've been instrumental in driving progress. From mainstream product management and strategizing business plans to literally talking to prospect users by randomly approaching them in public places , I've been the mastermind behind it all.

I've personally conducted user testings (calling the early users up to take feedback). I have defined the vision, mission, and created some irresistible value propositions. With a knack for juggling tasks, I've led the team, done project management, and negotiated partnerships, all while keeping freelancers and vendors in line.

Oh, and did I mention I've dabbled in design (like literally designing the mobile app, when we couldn't afford a designer), engineering (like writing pseudo code, writing logics and math equations, designing the DB structures and what not), investor relations, and even played matchmaker during hiring?

Mojek has been my playground, and I've left no stone unturned.

Key takeaways

  1. Embracing New Technologies: Working on a recent project provided an opportunity to showcase my ability to work with cutting-edge technologies such as AI, ML, LLM models and NLP. Despite not having to write production-ready code, I demonstrated my proficiency in understanding and integrating these technologies into the product.
  2. Solving the Right Problems: When dealing with platforms that have multiple sides, I have gained valuable insights into identifying and addressing the specific needs of each side. Understanding the impact of user experiences on the business has helped me prioritize solutions that bring meaningful value to all stakeholders.
  3. Operating in a Bootstrapped Startup: Being part of a bootstrapped startup has taught me valuable lessons in decision-making, financial management, and operating lean. I have honed my skills in managing expenditures and burn rate, ensuring efficient resource allocation and maximizing results within limited resources.
  4. Leveraging Communication Skills: My inherent communication skills have played a crucial role in expanding my professional network and establishing connections with CEOs and business veterans. Actively seeking mentoring opportunities has provided me with invaluable guidance and insights from experienced industry leaders.

P.S. This offers just a glimpse into my journey with Mojek. If you're interested in learning more about my experience and the exciting developments at Mojek, let's hop on a call!
